Bringing Peace Into the Home

Bringing Peace Into the Home is a campaign started by Liz Lemon Swindle.  Liz is an international artist whose desire is to teach and inspire through art. The Editor behind this campaign is Gina Bagley. Gina writes, "Does putting our kids in time out really work?  I was giving this some thought one day and came up with the idea of "Time Out with a Twist". Instead of taking two arguing children to their rooms I decided to put them in front of a painting of Jesus that hangs in our home.  I then told them to look at the picture of Jesus and talk to each other about what it meant to them. I saw a difference with these two children.  I have since looked for art to put into my home that teaches and inspires.  Art is an incredible way to teach lessons to children and even ourselves.  Often when I need a break I will sit down and look at the painting of Jesus on my wall and spend a quiet moment or two learning a few things about myself."

Do you think by having art in your home that has purpose and meaning can make a difference?  Tell us what your thoughts are and if you have had any inspiring stories with art that you are willing to share.

Notice in the two pictures above. Simply by placing an inspirational piece of art with this already beautiful decor immediately brought about a new feeling, with more purpose.  Look for areas in your home where you can place beautiful art that will teach, inspire and add purpose.  A great resource is Foundation Arts.  Get on this site to see the wide variety of inspirational paintings and gift ideas that will truly inspire and bring peace and purpose into your home and to those who you care about.

  2. When I first visited this site and saw that display, my heart actually twittered (not to be confused with the other site). I stared at the painting a few moments and thought, "I wish Jesus was smiling more." After I read your story, I thought "That painting is perfect." With the worry lines on His forhead, it looks like Jesus is concerned about something. In your case, your arguing children. What a lesson can be learned by having children discuss the root of Jesus' worry. Would certainly help me forget my minute problems. Liz, you are an abundantly gifted artist. I can't tell you how many people have looked at the cover of my book, Jesus My Son: Mary's Journal of Jesus' Early Life, and commented about your beautiful painting.

  3. I attended a Women's Conference in 2009 where we were given journals with a picture glued to the front. As I was struggling internally to find some answers I began to concentrate on this picture. I was overcome with emotion and realized that I needed to own this picture to be able at any time to feel this influence. The painting was Simon Dewey's The Lord Is My Shepherd. As soon as I was financially able I purchased this painting and display it in my home. It brings a certain level of comfort and peace. I also had a reaction to Liz Lemon Swindle's Come and See. I am now saving for it as well. I have a firm belief that art can influence the mood in one's home.

  4. I have a picture of Christ in my daughter's room and when she was only a few months old I asked if she knew Jesus and she looked right at the picture. I love the idea of this campaign. Artwork is very powerful.

  5. Years ago my husband complained that our contemporary artwork (which matched the colors) didn't say anything about us. We heard a conference talk about filling your home with art of the Savior and the Book of Mormon and we did. I love it. Others come in and love it too. Now we only have religious art, temples and family pictures. It reflects who we are and the kids can't help but be affected by it.

  6. I love your time out idea even though all my children are grown. And I love to hang inspirational art in my home. It makes you think not just of the art piece itself but the meaning behind it. As you fill you home with scripture inspired art and gospel music your home will become heaven on earth, a refuge from the outside world, a place of peace.

  7. I just discovered your blog and it filled me with happiness. I love the savior and the peace that brings. This painting reminds me of my daughter. It was one of her favorite paintings. I would love to hang it in my home to remind me of her since i can't see her everyday.

  10. I did something similar in our entryway, though it's a picture of our kids on an 11"x14" canvas. Before it was just an antique Asian side table with a fancy candle holder, a few small pictures and a red vase with cherry blossom stems. Now it speaks "home" and "family." I love it! And of course love the painting pictured above.
